Saint Lucia Flag

St. Lucia is located in the eastern Caribbean and is part of the Lesser Antilles. The first flag of St. Lucia was used from 1939-1967, when St. Lucia was still considered a British colony. The original flag consisted of a dark blue background, with the British Blue Ensign located in the upper left hand corner and St. Lucia’s coat of the arms located on the right. The coat of arms consisted of a black shield with two gold sticks of bamboo, situated to form a cross in the middle. Two Tudor roses and two fleurs-de-lis are each situated in one of the four sections created by the cross.

The current flag was officially accepted on March 1, 1967, when St. Lucia became an Associated State of the United Kingdom, rather than a colony. The flag itself was designed by an artist from St. Lucia, Dustan St. Omer. St. Lucia’s flag contains of a light blue background, with a triangle located in the center. A yellow triangle sits in front of a larger black, white-edged triangle in the center of the flag. The colors included inside the flag are of cultural and regional significance. The blue background is symbolic of the sky and the ocean, since the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic ocean surround the island. The colors black and white, that are contained in the larger triangle are symbolic of the relationship between the two cultures that primary live on the island. Looking at the triangle, the two cultures living on the island are depicted accurately, as more than 3/4 of the island’s population are of African descent. The smaller yellow triangle that sits in front of the black and white triangle, is symbolic of the country’s abundant sunshine. The triangles are also symbolic of the Pitons, Gros Piton and Petit Piton; two volcanic mountains that are situated on the southwest side of the island. The Pitons are also the national symbol of St. Lucia.

Although the design and colors of the St. Lucia flag have stayed the same since adopted in 1967, there have been a few slight changes to the colors and design over the years. In 1979, the triangle was narrowed and elongated and the background color of light blue was changed to a slightly darker shade of blue.
